Job Description
The Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering (www.me.gatech.edu) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Mechanical Engineering. Applicants will be considered at all ranks. Applications will be entertained in any of the School's research areas (Heat Transfer, Manufacturing, Fluid Dynamics, Advanced Materials, Bioengineering, Robotics and Design as they relate to Sustainability, Artificial-Intelligence/Machine Learning, and Systems Engineering) with an emphasis on interdisciplinary activities in System engineering and design, Engineering for food and water security and sustainability, Application of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science to Mechanical Engineering Systems and Urban Mobility and Human-machine interface. Those applying for Associate and Full Professor positions should have established records in research that demonstrate nationally and internationally recognized expertise. Industrial experience is desirable, but not required. Candidates are expected to teach and mentor a diverse student body. Along with undergraduate and graduate teaching, each position requires a balance of research and service responsibilities.

Associate Chair for Inclusive Excellence
Job Summary
The School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology seeks experienced applicants for the position of Associate Chair for Inclusive Excellence. This newly created position will report to the School Chair of Mechanical Engineering and work closely with the Associate Dean of Inclusive Excellence in the College of Engineering. This position will serve as the School’s Chief Diversity Officer as part of the School Chair’s leadership team, with overall responsibility for developing and advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives and fostering an inclusive culture.
Specific responsibilities of the Associate Chair for Inclusive Excellence include:
- Serve as Chief Diversity Officer for the School.
- Lead the development and implementation of proactive diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in concert with the College of Engineering’s shared vision of social justice, opportunity, community, and equity.
- Lead the development of a vision and effective strategy to create a culture for equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Complement, augment, and/or amplify existing DEIB-related efforts and activities in the school; Advise the School Chair, Associate Chairs, other School leadership and on matters related to fostering a shared community commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Advise and collaborate with faculty and Georgia Tech’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) on curricular content supporting DEIB in the School’s academic programs and research enterprise.
- Provide guidance to School’s diversity committee/councils.
- Partner with Institute Diversity, Equity, Inclusion office, and the Institute LGBTQIA Resource Center as well as colleagues in the Office of the Provost, Undergraduate Education, Graduate Studies, Faculty Affairs, and other academic units to ensure an inclusive climate and diverse workforce; Promote equity and inclusion in School’s administration, policies, and practices.
- Collect, track, analyze, and present data related to diversity initiatives and climate. Provide regular feedback to the School Chair, Cabinet, faculty, staff, and students on the effectiveness of the School’s efforts. Monitor and track peer and national trends and seek benchmarks for success, including suggestions for continual improvement.
- Engage with professional associations, national organizations, and peers to ensure the School is adhering to best practices and appropriately and exhaustively leveraging its full complement of resources in support of its DEIB mission and programming.
- Manage and provide consultative support for the evaluation of School diversity-related programs, activities, and initiatives; Identify potential sources of funding for diversity programs, generate support data, and write proposals to secure funding (including sponsored research diversity supplements).
- Serve in an advisory role for faculty recruitment; Provide counsel to committees on a wide range of DEIB best practices in search and hiring of tenure and tenure-track faculty throughout the recruitment process in support of the School’s commitment to equal opportunity, nondiscrimination, and affirmative action; Provide committees with information and guidance on Institute/College policies and practices, considering such things as the diversity of applicant pools, shortlists, and selectees, patterns of hiring; composition of search committees, applicant evaluation measures and avoidance of unconscious bias.
- Serve as a resource for ME graduate admissions committees and research advisors. Provide guidance on DEIB best practices in the admissions process to ensure diversity of entering cohorts and inclusion of underrepresented populations once on campus.
- Work with ME’s Communications Manager to organize communications, messaging, and programming efforts related to diversity and inclusion. Partner with ME's communications team to ensure all communications (articles, newsletters, websites, social media content, podcasts, videos, reports and publications, blogs, etc.) meet best practices for DEIB, and effectively communicate and amplify ME’s DEIB values, priorities, initiatives, and progress toward goals.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
The preferred deadline is December 1, 2022, however, the position will remain open until filled.
Required Qualifications
- An earned doctoral degree in their specific discipline(s)
- A record of excellence in academic and professional achievements, including experience building and supporting initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and belonging
- Evidence of success in an administrative leadership role
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years administrative leadership experience
- 3-5 years experience with DEIB programs and initiatives as they relate to student/staff/faculty experiences
- A competitive candidate would be a recognized scholar and thought leader in the areas of engineering, DEIB, and social justice
