A Step Forward: New Smart Shoe Insert Could Improve Mobility for People With Walking Problems

Maintaining balance while walking may seem automatic — until it isn’t. To address gait impairment, a major challenge for stroke and Parkinson’s patients, Georgia Tech researchers led by Peterson Professor and Harris Saunders Jr. Professor W. Hong Yeo have developed a new wearable electronic device that fits inside any shoe. Made of more than 170 flexible sensors, the smart insole measures foot pressure — data that could eventually be used to predict and prevent falls.
