Aaron Stebner, Eugene C. Gwaltney, Jr. Chair in Manufacturing and professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering, has been selected by ASM International to receive the 2025 ASM Silver Medal.
Established in 2010, the award acknowledges members in mid-career positions (typically 10 to 20 years of experience) for distinguished contributions to the field of materials science and engineering and the engineering community.
This award recognizes leadership at an early stage and encourages individuals to grow, nurture, and further contribute to the growth of the profession and ASM International. Stebner has served in leadership of the ASM International Organization on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies since 2012, including roles as president, conference chair, and now on the awards and nominations committee.
"It is a tremendous honor to receive the award both in recognition of service to ASM International, as well as contributions to the fields of materials and manufacturing education, research, and development," said Stebner.
Stebner works at the intersection of manufacturing, machine learning, materials, and mechanics. He serves as co-director of the statewide coalition of more than 40 nonprofits, colleges, and universities executing all of the projects within the Georgia AI Manufacturing (GA-AIM) technology corridor, a $65 million grant announced by the White House in 2022. He is leading the largest of nine projects, allowing him and Georgia Tech to transform the Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AMPF) into the Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AIMPF).
Stebner has won numerous awards, including an NSF CAREER award in 2014, the Colorado School of Mines Researcher of the Year Award in 2017, a Visiting Professor Fellowship from the Japan Society for the Preservation of Science in 2019, and the Woodruff School's Research Award in 2023. He also served as an associate editor and deputy editor for the journal Additive Manufacturing.
Stebner will receive the silver medal at ASM International's annual meeting, taking place in Detroit, Michigan, later this year.
