As an ME Ph.D. graduate in engineering design with a minor titled technology management, it was the blend of depth, breadth and practicality in my research experience that has best prepared me for my current job in industry. Having a research project linked to an industry application of design theory was key to that preparation. First, I developed a firm understanding of the fundamentals in my area and how to apply them, and then, based on my exposure to industry, I developed what I like to think of as a "healthy disrespect" for those same fundamentals or theories. That "disrespect" is an understanding that few models are perfect or complete and that you have to be prepared to find the unexpected - my first year working is a testimonial to that! The major strengths of the program are high standards, accessible faculty, encouragement of nontraditional majors, minors and thesis topics, and people who cared about me as an individual. This last strength was the major reason that I chose - and was then very glad that I did - the Woodruff School over three other graduate programs.

I would rate the program very highly. The School has committed significant personnel and resources to embrace relatively new and rapidly developing areas of research. As students, we were exposed to a variety of industry activities and interests in these areas while still pursuing fundamental research questions. That combination seems to be key for being prepared for life after graduate school.
