My graduate research work had variety. I taught senior labs for a year in an area unrelated to my research. I felt this added considerable perspective and depth to my overall learning. I found a lot of synergy between my graduate work and ongoing programs as well as the introduction of new courses into the curriculum. This allowed me to leverage multiple dimensions and contribute toward the emerging body of knowledge.
My research was in an emerging area, and defining the problem posed special challenges. The ME program allowed me the unique opportunity to work directly with industry; I spent summers working on-site with our industry sponsor. This helped me establish research relevance while ensuring industry pragmatism. I also had the opportunity to participate actively in conferences and workshops, which enabled me to present several papers prior to graduation.
