I was initially interested in Georgia Tech for graduate school because of its national reputation as a top-notch engineering school. I visited with the Mechanical Engineering faculty, and learned of the many interesting research projects in the area of acoustics and vibrations, which was the field I was interested in. I was particularly interested in those research programs supported by the Navy because of my Navy background. This is what led me to graduate school at Georgia Tech.
My graduate research experience has been directly applicable to the research I am currently doing for the Navy. My thesis research involved fluid-borne acoustic propagation in a pipe and active cancellation of the fluid-borne acoustic waves. After Georgia Tech, I started working at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, where I am doing research related to passive and active acoustic silencing in fluid piping systems for Navy surface ships and submarines.
The major strength of the graduate program at Georgia Tech is a good selection of courses in the area I was interested in (acoustics and vibrations) and interesting, ongoing sponsored research in these areas. I was very pleased with the graduate program, faculty, student body, and facilities at Georgia Tech.
