Step 3. How to Fill out the Degree Petition

  • Click here for a blank PDF degree petition. This is a writable file that you can fill in electronically.
  • Click here for PDF instructions to fill out the degree petition and an example of a filled out degree petition.
  • A few important tips are below:
    • Reactivation Information - If you do not graduate the semester you initially petitioned for, then you must turn in a reactivated degree petition during the semester that you plan to graduate.
      • All reactivated degree petitions are due to the registrar's office by the last day of phase 2 registration for that semester. Click here for reactivated degree petition due dates.
      • Reactivated degree petitions must follow the same procedure as a new degree petition (ex. CAPP reports must be attached, etc.)
      • Students must schedule an appointment with Kristi Mehaffey to sign your degree petition.
      • If the degree petition is turned in during phase 2 registration, students are responsible for taking a reactivated degree petition to the registrar's office. The ME department will not take the degree petition to the registrar's office.
    • Co-op Signature - If you have not completed your co-op requirements, you must turn in your degree petition without the signature. After you finish your co-op assigment, you must go to the registrar, pick up your degree petition, obtain the co-op signature and return your degree petition to the registrar.
    • Degree Petition Fee - Starting Fall 2008, there is no degree petition fee.
    • Catalog Year - All students are on the 2008-2009 catalog year, regardless of when you started. The 2008-2009 catalog year is the same as the previous 2 catalog years.
    • Changing your Graduation Term - If you need to change your graduation term, send Kristi Mehaffey an e-mail asking that your degree petition is changed to inactive for the term. A reactivated degree petition must then be turned in by the reactivation deadline the new semester which you plan to graduate.
    • The 36 Hour Rule - A student's last 36 hours must be taken in residence at Georgia Tech. Students who plan to take a class at another university within the last 36 hours must Petition the Faculty to ask for a waiver to this rule PRIOR to taking the class.
    • The 10 Year Rule - Course work over 10 years old will not be used toward a BS degree. Students with course work more than 10 years old must Petition the Faculty to use the old coursework. In addition, the department offering the class must approve that the class may be used.

Step 4. Minors, Certificates and Second Degrees (if applicable)

  • Minors - If you earned a minor, fill out the Minor Form and have the department offering the minor sign the form. Contact the advisor for that major for the signature. Signed minor forms must be turned in with your degree petition. The ME department will sign for the major school after it is turned in and then turn it into the registrar.
  • Certificates - Certificates forms are not turned in with the degree petitions; they are turned in to the department offering the certificate. Your major school does not need to sign those forms.
  • Second Major - Two separate degree petitions must be turned in, one for each major.

Step 5. Print and Review CAPP Report

  • Use CAPP to print out your Detailed Requirements report and Additional Information report.
    • Go to OSCAR. Select Secured Access Login and log into OSCAR.
    • Select Student Services and Financial Aid > Student Records > CAPP - Advisement and Degree Audit.
    • Select ' Fall 2008 ' for the Current Term and press Submit.
    • Select What-If Analysis on the bottom of the page.
    • Select ' Fall 2008 ' for the Entry Term, regardless of when you started. Be sure to select the correct Entry Term, or else CAPP will not work right!
    • Select ' BS in Mechanical Engineering ' or ' BS in Nuclear Engineering ' in the Program drop down and press Continue.
    • Let the Campus drop down at None. Select the First Major appropriately and press Submit.
    • Select the Evaluation Term as ' Fall 2008 ' and press Generate Request.
    • Select the Detailed Requirements option button and press Submit.
    • You must make your page orientation Landscape before printing. In the menu bar select File > Page Setup and then select Landscape.
    • Print your CAPP report.
    • Press the User's Back button.
    • Select the Additional Information option button and then press Submit.
    • Print your Additional Information report.
  • Do NOT staple your CAPP reports.
  • Do not write substitutions on your CAPP report or your degree petition. Substitutions must be indicated on a post-it attached to your CAPP Report.

Step 6. Turn in your Degree Petition, CAPP Reports and Minor Form (if applicable) to the Office of Student Services (MRDC 3112)

  • Your degree petition, CAPP report and Minor Form (if applicable) must be turned in at the front desk of the Office of Student Services (MRDC room 3112). You do not need an appointment with an advisor to do this. You will be notified by e-mail when the degree petition has been audited.
  • Degree petitions will not be accepted without the following:
    • The CAPP and Additional Information reports are attached and printed in Landscape mode. (Do not staple them!)
    • The degree petition is signed and properly filled out.
  • The ME department will sign the degree petition as the 'major school' and turn it into the Registrar's Office after it is audited. You do not need to do anything else with your degree petition after it is turned in to the front desk in MRDC room 3112.

Step 7. Pick up your Copy of the Degree Petition from the Office of Student Services (MRDC 3112)

  • You will receive an e-mail telling you that your copy of the degree petition was audited. It is your responsibility to pick it from the Office of Student Services (MRDC 3112). It will contain your final list of classes required for graduation.
  • If any problems are found on your degree petition, you will receive a separate e-mail outlining the problems.

Step 8. Tracking Your Graduation Status on OSCAR

  • Before the start of your graduating semester, verify that your graduation petition status is OK through the Web Student Access System. This information will generally not be available until two weeks before you last semester!
    • Go to OSCAR. Select Secured Access Login and log into OSCAR.
    • Select Student Services and Financial Aid > Student Records > View Degree Candidate Information.
