Nazanin Bassiri-Gharb, Associate Professor with the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, was recently elected as the President-elect of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S). She will serve a term of 2 years (2016-2017) as President-elect, before serving as President in 2018-2019. Her term will continue for four more years, first as junior and then as senior past president.

“I am excited and honored to receive this vote of confidence from the Society as the new UFFC-S President-Elect. IEEE UFFC-S has been my home as a professional society since 2004, when I attended the joint Ultrasonics, Ferroelectric and Frequency Control symposia in Montreal,” said Prof. Bassiri-Gharb. “Since then I have been involved in various volunteer and elected positions with the Society and I am looking forward to continue contributing to the advancement of our technical field, our members and the Society in the years to come.”

As the name suggests, UFFC is the technical leader in ultrasonics, ferroelectrics and frequency control, impacting the field from the fundamental science of ferroelectric an piezoelectric materials, to technological applications in biological and healthcare applications with medical ultrasounds, underwater sonars, non-destructive testing, energy harvesting, time coordination and distribution, frequency generation and control, and many other.

Bill Wepfer, Chair of the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, says, " "Nazanin's election to this leadership position reflects the strong support she has among her professional colleagues and the deep respect they have for her pioneering contributions to the field.""

IEEE is the largest technical society in the world. It consists of more than 40 societies and councils with a membership over 400,000. The Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) of the IEEE includes more than 2,000 members, and promotes the advancement of the theory and practice of ultrasonics, ferroelectrics, frequency generation and control, and allied arts and sciences.

In addition to being a technical leader in the areas of ultrasonics, ferroelectrics, and frequency control, the UFFC-S sponsors and organizes three annual symposia with locations rotated around the world. The UFFC-S publishes an archival journal, IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control (TUFFC), develops standards, supports its chapters around the world, and sponsors an educational program. The UFFC-S is governed by the Administrative Committee (AdCom), comprised by elected members and officers. The UFFC-S President leads the affairs of the UFFC-S and presides at all meetings, representing the Society to the IEEE.
