4793 GROUP PROJECT
The purpose of this project is for you to gain experience integrating the selection of materials and processes for specific applications. This task is best performed by analyzing a specific application in a small group. In order for the class to benefit each group will be required to submit a one page summary of their project for distribution to the class - an example will be posted on the web. The groups will make oral presentations of their applications and answer questions. We expect to see calculations and quantitative results in the report and presentation.
Deadlines:
- 2/20 Submit names of group members (3 optimum)
- 2/20 Submit product candidates (3, in order of priority)
- 2/25 Group and product assignments posted on web-site
- 4/22 Group oral presentations in class
Report Format and Grading:
- Summary - 10 (Must be one page for distribution to class.)
- Performance requirements - 5 (Must be quantitative.)
- Materials selection - 20 (We expect to see calculations.)
- Process selection and analysis - 20 (You are expected to go beyond the example reports. We expect to see calculations.)
- Cost estimate - 15 (We expect to see calculations.)
- Conclusions and recommendations - 5
Past Applications:
- 1996: air cargo crate, bike crank, bike seat post, hang glider frame, shock absorber rod, jet engine blades, hip prosthesis, slurry pipe
- 1997: wing flap (elevator), lawn mower housing, tennis racquet, bow for musical instrument, hiking bag frame, valve cover, bicycle helmet, flywheel, printed circuit board, pool cue
- 1998: body armor, aircraft tail-hook, portable shovel, lacrosse stick, racecar airfoil, water buoy, racecar wheel, gun, car ramps, luge sled, utility pole
- 1999: bridge repair strips, skim board, crutches, Shoe top-lift, EV driveshaft, "plywood", molded circuit board
- 2000: brake rotor, sculling oar, military helmets, hip replacement joint
Sample reports will be made available for check out from the course instructors.
