Team Spot On Takes Capstone's Top Prize

Team Spot On Takes Capstone's Top Prize

The 2014 Capstone Design Expo featured more than 900 students and 170 teams from eight schools and three colleges tackling real-world problems. Choosing the best of the bunch was no easy task for the judges who came from a range of professional and academic backgrounds. In the end, Team Spot On was awarded the prize for best overall project.

The interdisciplinary team of mechanical and biomedical engineers was sponsored by Smith and Nephew, who tasked Spot On with devising a better way to insert screws into the metal rods, or nails, that hold fractured femurs together.

Woodruff School Students Receive NSF Graduate Fellowships

Woodruff School Students Receive NSF Graduate Fellowships

This year, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded graduate fellowships to 2,000 students (from roughly 14,000 applicants) in a wide range of disciplines in engineering, sciences and social sciences. 92 awards were given to students in mechanical engineering and among them, 8 were from the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, including Harrison Bartlett, Alfred Deangelis, Ravi Haksar, Alisha Kasam, Charlsie Lemons, Cole Simpson, Justin Wilbanks, and Yaroslav Vasyliv.

Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, which deals with really small-sized stuff, may be onto something really big, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), who provided the funding for the groundbreaking study, is paying close attention.

A Message from the School Chair

It is hard not to appear repetitive and trite at this time of year: the academic year winds down, we celebrate the achievements and joy of our graduates, and watch with pride as they embark upon the next chapters in their lives. However, this year was particularly special in several ways. This spring’s graduation marked the end of the Woodruff School’s yearlong celebration of 125 years!
