Smart Hydrogel Coating Creates "Stick-slip" Control of Capillary Action

Coating the inside of glass microtubes with a polymer hydrogel material dramatically alters the way capillary forces draw water into the tiny structures, researchers have found. The discovery could provide a new way to control microfluidic systems, including popular lab-on-a-chip devices.

Professors Named ASME Fellows

Professors Jerry Qi and Ting Zhu were both recently named American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellows.

ASME honors its members by elevating them to the grade of Fellow, thereby ensuring ASME's commitment to its vision "to be the essential resource for mechanical engineers and other technical professionals throughout the world for solutions that benefit humankind." The Fellow grade is truly a distinction among over 113,000 ASME members.

 

Harris Announced as ELATE Fellow

Tequila Harris, Associate Professor, has been accepted as a Fellow in the 2015-2016 Class of the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering (ELATE) Program at Drexel University.

ELATE at Drexel® is a national leadership development program designed to advance senior women faculty in academic engineering, computer science, and related fields into effective institutional leadership roles within their schools and universities.

Genzale Receives ARO Young Investigator Award

Caroline Genzale was recently awarded the Army Research Office (ARO) Young Investigator Award, which includes a 3-year grant starting in Fall 2015. Her project, entitled, Spatially and Temporally Resolved Imaging of Primary Breakup in High-Pressure Fuel Sprays, will support the development of a novel high-resolution imaging diagnostic to study the mechanisms of atomization in high-pressure fuel sprays for diesel combustion engines.
