Transcription factor-based cell therapies for regenerative medicine

This research has focused on integrating cells genetically modified to express the Runx2 osteoblast transcription factor into scaffolds to create hybrid constructs that promote bone formation and repair. This strategy has been established in both osteogenic cells, including clinically-relevant bone marrow stromal cells, and non-osteogenic cells, such as myoblasts and fibroblasts, providing robust cell sources for these regenerative medicine applications. We have recently exploited this approach to generate continuous gradient interfaces between soft-tissue and bone. We are evaluating the ability of these engineered interfaces to promote tissue integration and repair.
